Overview
By the 1960s, the Volkswagen Beetle had evolved from a post-war economy car into a surprising rally contender. With its air-cooled rear-mounted engine, compact footprint, and rugged torsion-bar suspension, the Beetle proved exceptionally reliable on rough roads and in extreme climates. Though never a factory rally car, it was a favorite of privateer teams and gained class success in events ranging from the snowy Alps to the deserts of Africa and Mexico.
