Volvo Amazon (120 Series)

Overview

Produced from 1956 to 1970, the Volvo Amazon (internally known as the 120 Series) blended Volvo’s reputation for safety with proven rally performance. With a rigid unit-body, strong live rear axle, and Volvo’s B18 engine introduced in 1961, the Amazon earned its place as a dependable long-distance rally car. It gained a strong following among privateers and factory teams alike for its toughness and drivability on rough stages.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The Amazon was among the first production cars to feature front seatbelts as standard and was praised for its solid handling. Rally-prepped versions often included roll cages, upgraded shocks, and additional cooling for endurance use.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1963 Acropolis Rally — Class Victory — Factory-supported Amazons performed exceptionally over harsh Greek gravel stages.
  • 1964 East African Safari Rally — Top 10 Overall Finish — Known for surviving one of the toughest rallies of the decade with minimal damage.
  • 1965 Monte Carlo Rally — Group 1 Class Win — Proved its cold-weather traction and dependability in Alpine stages.

Volvo's factory team and top privateers used the Amazon to compete successfully in major rallies across Europe, Africa, and Australia, building its image as a rugged all-rounder.

Driving Characteristics

Thanks to a strong chassis and predictable suspension geometry, the Amazon handled rough roads and tight corners with ease. The B18 engine delivered reliable torque across a wide rev range, ideal for long climbs and high-speed gravel work.
