History 1980s

Ford Sierra RS Cosworth / 4x4

Overview

Introduced in 1987, the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was designed as a Group A homologation special. Built by Ford Motorsport in collaboration with Cosworth, it combined aggressive aero styling with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and exceptional tarmac grip. Early models featured rear-wheel drive, which limited their competitiveness on loose surfaces but gave them excellent performance on asphalt. By 1988, the RS Cosworth was updated with an all-wheel-drive version (the 4x4), making it a more versatile challenger in the WRC. While it never matched the dominance of Lancia, it found success in European championships and tarmac-specialized events.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The Cosworth engine was renowned for its tuning potential and durability. Combined with aggressive downforce elements and rally suspension geometry, it gave the Sierra strong straight-line speed and excellent cornering on clean surfaces.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1987–1989 European Rally Championship: Multiple wins on tarmac events across France, Belgium, and Spain.
  • 1988–89 British Rally Championship: Popular with privateers and works teams alike; consistent podiums on mixed-surface events.
  • WRC Appearances: Limited success due to Lancia’s dominance, but strong stage times on asphalt rallies.

While the Sierra RS never won a WRC round outright during the 1980s, it was a consistent performer in national-level events and served as a key stepping stone in Ford’s rally development timeline.

Driving Characteristics

The rear-wheel-drive Sierra Cosworth was thrilling but tail-happy, requiring skilled throttle control and bravery in high-speed corners. Its power delivery and balance made it excellent on tarmac, while the AWD 4x4 version brought improved stability and traction on gravel. Both versions had immense tuning headroom and were beloved by aggressive drivers who wanted a raw, responsive feel.
