Developed in 1984 as a Group B homologation car, the Škoda 130 LR was based on the humble Škoda 105/120 series, transformed into a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive rally machine. Built by AZNP Mladá Boleslav, it represented Eastern Bloc engineering at its best — light, durable, and cleverly optimized for local conditions. While it lacked the raw pace of Western Group B giants, the 130 LR earned a reputation for punching above its weight in regional rallies and select international events, often outperforming expectations thanks to reliability and agile handling.

Though never a threat to Group B titans like Audi or Peugeot, the 130 LR proved that smart design and determined driving could still make an impact — especially in the hands of Eastern European crews with limited resources.

Driving Characteristics

The 130 LR was incredibly light and nimble, with responsive turn-in and strong traction thanks to its rear-mounted engine. However, it could be twitchy at the limit and required experienced throttle control to avoid oversteer. Its naturally aspirated engine had to be revved hard to keep momentum, rewarding a high-effort, aggressive driving style on tight roads.
