History 1990s

Ford Sierra RS Cosworth 4x4

Overview

The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth 4x4 was a Group A rally weapon developed in the late 1980s and used into the early 1990s. Based on the road-going Sierra platform, it combined a turbocharged Cosworth engine with a newly integrated all-wheel-drive system, offering Ford a competitive platform against rising AWD threats from Japan. While not a championship winner, it proved reliable and powerful across varied surfaces, acting as the direct predecessor to the more famous Escort RS Cosworth.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The Sierra 4x4 introduced a symmetrical AWD system to the Cosworth lineup, giving Ford the traction advantage it had lacked during the rear-wheel-drive RS500 era. The long-wheelbase chassis offered high-speed stability, particularly on gravel and mixed terrain.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • Podium Finishes in 1990–1992 WRC Events — Drivers like François Delecour and Malcolm Wilson delivered strong results on gravel stages.
  • 1990 RAC Rally Podium — Showcased strength in home conditions with a durable performance.
  • The Sierra 4x4 served as a stepping stone to Ford’s more iconic Escort RS Cosworth and marked a serious return to AWD rallying.

While it never claimed major titles, the Sierra RS Cosworth 4x4 was a key transitional car in Ford’s rally evolution, proving the effectiveness of AWD and turbocharged power under Group A constraints.

Driving Characteristics

The Sierra 4x4 was composed and fast, particularly on flowing gravel and snowy stages. It excelled in high-speed conditions and was known for strong grip and engine flexibility. However, it was heavier and less nimble than some newer compact rivals, requiring a precise and committed driving style.
