Renault 5 GT Turbo

Overview

The Renault 5 GT Turbo was the rally-bred version of Renault’s hot hatch icon, developed to comply with Group A regulations following the ban of Group B. Based on the second-generation Renault 5, the GT Turbo offered a lightweight, turbocharged platform that proved popular with privateers and Renault-backed teams in national and European championships. Though it never reached the global dominance of 4WD rivals, it remained a competitive and agile option on tight tarmac and gravel rallies into the early 1990s.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The GT Turbo featured responsive boost delivery and a stiff, nimble chassis ideal for twisty rally conditions. Its simplicity and affordability made it a favorite in regional championships and rally cups throughout Europe.

Driving Characteristics

Feisty and responsive, the GT Turbo rewarded commitment and throttle control. Turbo lag and torque steer could challenge less experienced drivers, but its light weight and sharp front end made it ideal for hairpins and mountain switchbacks. It excelled on sealed surfaces and short sprint rallies.
