History 1990s

Subaru Impreza WRC97 / WRC98 / WRC99

Overview

The Subaru Impreza WRC97, WRC98, and WRC99 formed a trio of factory rally cars developed by Prodrive for the newly introduced World Rally Car class. These models evolved annually from 1997 to 1999, building on the success of the Group A Impreza 555 while taking advantage of relaxed homologation requirements. Freed from production-based restrictions, these cars were wider, more aggressive, and more technologically advanced. They retained the legendary blue-and-gold 555 livery and became visual and performance icons of the WRC’s late 1990s era.

Technical Specs & Innovations

Each model year brought key upgrades: the WRC98 introduced a sequential transmission and improved weight distribution, while the WRC99 refined suspension geometry and durability. All models prioritized mechanical grip, turbo response, and handling precision on a wide variety of stages.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1997 Safari Rally & Rally Catalunya Wins — Colin McRae delivered stunning early success in the debut WRC97.
  • 1998 Podium Finishes — Maintained competitiveness despite mechanical gremlins and fierce rivals.
  • 1999 Rally Australia & Rally GB Wins — Richard Burns took the WRC99 to victory against a packed field.

Although Subaru narrowly missed out on a championship during this era, the Impreza WRC series remained a top-tier competitor and fan favorite, finishing consistently at the front and challenging dominant teams like Mitsubishi and Toyota.

Driving Characteristics

The Impreza WRCs were praised for their balance, traction, and confidence-inspiring behavior on all surfaces. The combination of active differentials, quick turbo response, and strong suspension allowed drivers to push aggressively in varied conditions. McRae's flamboyant style and Burns’ precision both matched the car’s capabilities in different ways.
