History 2000s

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution WRC (2001–2005)

Overview

Following the success of the Group A Lancer Evolutions in the 1990s, Mitsubishi developed a series of WRC-spec Lancer Evolution models for the early 2000s. These cars maintained the brand’s AWD and turbocharged formula but faced a rapidly advancing field of rivals. Drivers like Tommi Mäkinen, Gigi Galli, and Harri Rovanperä extracted strong performances, though manufacturer victories became rare.

Technical Specs & Innovations

Built on Mitsubishi’s proven rally DNA, the WRC-spec cars retained the brand’s gravel strength but struggled on tarmac compared to newer rivals.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • Podium finishes with multiple drivers: Proved competitive on select events.
  • Strong gravel performances: Particularly effective in rough conditions.
  • Key development platform: Helped transition Mitsubishi’s rally program into modern WRC regulations.

Though it never regained the dominance of the 1990s, the Lancer Evolution WRC maintained Mitsubishi’s rally presence.

Driving Characteristics

Stable and durable, with excellent traction on loose surfaces. Heavier steering and less agility on tarmac compared to smaller rivals.
