Toyota GT86 CS-R3

Overview

Launched by Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) in 2014, the GT86 CS-R3 was a homologated rally car built to FIA R3 regulations. Based on the road-going GT86 sports coupe, it featured a naturally aspirated boxer engine, rear-wheel drive, and a focus on driver skill over outright power. It marked one of the few modern attempts to reintroduce RWD into mainstream rally categories, offering a unique driving experience compared to the AWD dominance of the era.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The CS-R3's lightweight chassis and RWD layout emphasized driver finesse and car control, providing a thrilling alternative to the more forgiving AWD platforms.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 2015–2019 European Rally Championship: Campaigned by privateers in the ERC 3 category.
  • German Rally Championship: Achieved multiple podiums in 2WD classes.
  • FIA R3 category rallies worldwide: Praised for its entertainment value and rear-drive dynamics.

Though not an overall winner against AWD competition, the GT86 CS-R3 carved out a loyal following for its pure, tail-happy rally style.

Driving Characteristics

The GT86 CS-R3 rewarded aggressive, precision driving. Its RWD setup encouraged oversteer, allowing skilled drivers to rotate the car through corners with throttle and steering input. While slower in slippery conditions, it was unmatched in fun factor on tarmac stages.
