Overview
Rolf Mellde, born in 1919 in Sweden, was a pioneering figure in Saab’s motorsport history, serving as both a lead rally driver and the head of Saab’s competition department during the 1950s and 1960s. While not a headline-winning driver like Erik Carlsson, Mellde’s technical vision and steady performances were critical to establishing Saab’s rally reputation. He was deeply involved in the design, development, and real-world testing of the Saab 92, 93, and 96 — cars that would go on to become rally icons. His dual expertise as an engineer and competition driver made him one of the most valuable behind-the-scenes architects of Saab’s early rally success.
