Overview
Pentti Airikkala, born in 1945 in Finland, carved out a unique career as one of rallying’s most respected underdogs. While not a full-time WRC contender, he became a standout figure in the British Rally Championship and select WRC rounds during the 1980s. Known for his deep gravel expertise and late-career persistence, Airikkala combined smooth Scandinavian control with tactical maturity. He was a key member of the 'Flying Finns' and finally earned a WRC win at the end of the decade—one of the oldest to ever do so at the time.
