Overview
Björn Waldegård, born in 1943 in Sweden, was rallying’s first official World Champion in 1979 and remained a formidable presence throughout the 1980s. Known for his composed, deliberate driving style and deep technical understanding, Waldegård continued to compete at the highest level well into his 40s. While no longer a title contender during the 1980s peak, he became a specialist in endurance events—especially African rallies—where his experience and resilience shined.
