History 2010s

Jari-Matti Latvala

Overview

Jari-Matti Latvala, born in 1985 in Töysä, Finland, entered the 2010s as one of the most exciting and unpredictable talents in the WRC. Already the youngest driver to win a WRC event (2008 Swedish Rally), Latvala spent the early 2010s with Ford before joining Volkswagen Motorsport in 2013. There, he became Sébastien Ogier’s closest rival, scoring multiple wins and contributing to VW’s dominance. In 2017, he joined the newly formed Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, playing a key role in the team’s rapid return to winning form.

🏆 Major Achievements

Latvala’s ability to deliver victories across different manufacturers cemented him as one of the sport’s most versatile modern drivers.

Vehicle Highlights

  • Ford Fiesta RS WRC: His primary weapon in the early 2010s, scoring multiple rally wins.
  • Volkswagen Polo R WRC: Claimed some of his most dominant victories during VW’s peak era.
  • Toyota Yaris WRC: Achieved Toyota’s first modern WRC win and fought for podiums throughout 2017–2019.

Latvala’s adaptability to vastly different car setups allowed him to stay competitive for over a decade in changing technical regulations.

Driving Style & Legacy

Latvala is renowned for his maximum-attack approach — blisteringly quick when on form, but prone to mistakes when pushing too hard. Fans admired his fearless commitment and love for rallying, as well as his sportsmanship. He became a rally historian and ambassador for the sport, respected for his knowledge and enthusiasm as much as his driving skills.

Navigation & Teamwork

Latvala enjoyed long-standing partnerships with co-drivers Miikka Anttila and Juho Hänninen. His collaboration with Anttila was particularly notable, lasting over 15 years and yielding the vast majority of his WRC successes. Their chemistry in the car was a cornerstone of his career longevity.
