History 1960

1966 Österreichische Alpenfahrt (Austrian Alpine Rally)

Overview

The 1966 Österreichische Alpenfahrt (International Austrian Alpine Rally) retained its status as one of Europe’s most demanding endurance rallies. Traversing a mix of alpine passes and narrow tarmac lanes, it was a highlight of the European Rally Championship calendar and drew top teams from across the continent. Despite the scenic backdrop, the rally’s changing weather, tight timing, and elevation shifts made survival as important as speed.

Route

Total Distance: Approximately 1,700 kilometers
Surface: Predominantly tarmac with intermittent gravel segments and alpine runoff
Key Challenges: Großglockner High Alpine Road, fog-bound ascents, and downhill braking zones with little margin for error

Spanning much of the Austrian Alps, the 1966 edition challenged both man and machine with long regularity sections, surprise navigation zones, and constant surface variation.

Timing and consistency mattered more than outright speed, especially with overnight segments and minimal servicing allowed.

Navigation & Challenges

From start to finish, this rally tested teams with a blend of physical terrain and mental calculation.

  • Altitude Sensitivity: Engine performance and brake fade increased as elevation climbed
  • Fog and Rain: Frequent throughout the alpine stretches, especially at dawn and dusk
  • Co-Driver Demands: Navigation was key to avoiding penalties on regularity sections and during secret checkpoints

The 1966 Alpenfahrt was less about being the fastest and more about being the smartest. Those who finished were not only skilled, but incredibly disciplined and mechanically prepared.
