1966 Rallye dei Fiori

Overview

The 6th Rallye dei Fiori returned to the hills around Sanremo in 1966, offering a mix of fast seaside asphalt and technical mountain segments through the Ligurian hinterland. Known today as the precursor to the Rallye Sanremo, this event tested agility, grip, and mechanical reliability during the early European rally season.

Route

Sanremo–Bordighera: Sweeping tarmac stretches alongside the Mediterranean Sea.
Colle di Nava: Narrow gravel and tarmac mountain pass with tight elevation changes.
Monte Ceppo Section: Rugged mixed-surface loops demanding adaptable handling.

Crews navigated a blend of challenging coastal and Alpine terrain:

Surface transitions and early spring conditions made tire choice and pace control essential.

Navigation & Challenges

Crews faced rapid transitions between weather systems and surface types. Navigation played a critical role through the switchback-filled hills and foggy early-morning descents.

  • Grip Variability: Dry tarmac turned slick with morning mist in shaded mountain zones.
  • Pace Note Reliance: High-speed downhill segments required split-second co-driver calls.
  • Tire Wear: Abrasive gravel linked with high-speed braking zones increased the risk of punctures.

The 1966 Rallye dei Fiori served as a proving ground for Italy’s next generation of rally talent and underscored the Fulvia HF's rally pedigree ahead of the World Rally Championship era.
