1969 Rallye de Lorraine

Overview

Rallye de Lorraine offered a dense and compact tarmac challenge through northeastern France’s most scenic but unforgiving forests. Featuring blind crests, wet road surfaces, and a steady drizzle throughout most of the weekend, the event demanded a calm head and steady hands.

Route

Distance: ~950 km
Surface: Primarily tarmac with occasional mud-covered segments
Hazards: Fog, wet curves, mud runoff, poor visibility

Routes traced through the Vosges forest roads and foothills outside Nancy and Épinal. Visibility was often limited due to morning fog and evening rain, while fallen leaves added slickness to already narrow lines.

Each mistake on these roads meant a steep ditch, a missed control, or retirement.

Navigation & Challenges

Crews faced fogged windshields, soaked notes, and timing traps hidden behind sharp bends. Any miscommunication or delayed callout risked a missed turn or lost time.

  • Weather Strategy: Understanding rain patterns and tire wear was essential
  • Timing Focus: Narrow margin of error between penalty zones
  • Coordination: Fast mental recovery needed after every curve

1969’s Lorraine event was the very definition of a thinking driver’s rally.
