The 1973 Rajd Polski delivered yet another brutal gravel challenge to the WRC field, set across the fast but punishing rural roads of southeastern Poland. With long stages and sudden weather changes, mechanical attrition remained high. Achim Warmbold and co-driver Jean Todt pushed through with precise teamwork and consistent pace, giving Fiat its first WRC win of the season.

Route

Bieszczady Mountains: Rolling elevation changes and long, loose-surface sweepers required maximum throttle control.
Open Plains: Dusty gravel straights where top-end speed and brake balance were key.
Rural Crossings: Sudden dips, fords, and tight junctions tested reactions at high speed.

The rally’s gravel route twisted through farmland, forests, and small villages, with long straights, frequent jumps, and fast corner combinations.

Rainstorms midway through the event turned dry roads into slick clay traps, shaking up standings and exposing tire strategy gaps.
