1986 Rallye Sanremo (Italy)

Overview

Event Name: 1986 Rallye Sanremo (Italy)

Date: October 6–10, 1986

Start Location: Sanremo, Italy

Finish Location: Sanremo, Italy

Total Distance: 512 km of special stages

Surface: Asphalt and gravel

The 1986 Sanremo Rally began as a showcase of Italian talent and mixed-surface mastery, but ended mired in one of the most controversial decisions in WRC history. Miki Biasion led home a Lancia 1-2 finish after the Peugeot team was disqualified mid-event over alleged illegal side skirts—a protest widely seen as politically motivated. Peugeot appealed, and the FIA later annulled the entire event, making it the only WRC round with no official results for the season.

Route

Andagna–Pigna: Tight and twisting tarmac stage through ancient hill towns with little margin for error.
Colle Langan: Gravel stage with rapid elevation change and treacherous hairpins.
Monte Ceppo: Long loop with mixed surfaces that pushed suspension tuning and driver focus to the limit.

Sanremo's dual-surface layout tested tire choice, adaptability, and co-driver rhythm throughout Ligurian backroads:

Changing weather further complicated tire strategy, making team calls vital to overall performance—though none of it would ultimately count toward the title.

Navigation & Challenges

  • Mixed Surfaces: Rapid surface changes within a single stage challenged tire compounds and suspension tuning.
  • Political Pressure: Home advantage, media attention, and regulation gray areas fueled high-stakes decisions.
  • Regulatory Fallout: The event’s cancellation left teams frustrated and disillusioned—many viewed it as the moment Group B lost its legitimacy.

The 1986 Rallye Sanremo was meant to be a celebration of Italian rallying excellence, but became a symbol of controversy that hastened the end of rallying’s most powerful era.
