The 2000 Rally Argentina tested crews with classic South American gravel — a blend of fast mountain sections, rough terrain, and numerous water crossings. Richard Burns once again proved unstoppable on the loose surface, leading most of the rally in commanding fashion to notch his third win of the season and strengthen his championship charge.

Route

El Condor – Copina: Rocky climbs with heavy fog and deep ruts — one of the most iconic and demanding tests of the event.
Mina Clavero: Fast downhill descents with long straights and sudden braking zones over crests.
Santa Rosa: Featured multiple splash crossings and quick transitions between wide and narrow sections.

Held in the Sierras de Córdoba, the rally included a mix of twisty mountain climbs and wide, high-speed valley routes. Key stages included:

Heavy rain prior to the rally left some roads waterlogged and deeply rutted, forcing changes to tire strategies and suspension setups mid-event.

🏆 Results

Overall Winner
Richard Burns & Robert Reid · Subaru Impreza S5 WRC
2nd Place
Marcus Grönholm & Timo Rautiainen · Peugeot 206 WRC
3rd Place
Carlos Sainz & Luis Moya · Ford Focus WRC

Burns led the rally with near-perfect execution, handling the most brutal sections with confidence. Grönholm kept the pressure on but was unable to match Burns’ consistency over the longer stages. Sainz once again delivered crucial points for Ford with another podium finish.

Navigation & Challenges

  • Water Crossings: Spectacular but risky — required precise speed and timing to avoid hydroplaning or water intake failures.
  • Altitude: Some stages climbed over 2,000 meters — thinning air reduced engine performance and taxed drivers physically.
  • Stage Wear: The rally’s repeated use of roads made them deeply rutted by day two — forcing careful wheel placement and extra caution in low-visibility zones.

Burns’ dominant run in Argentina solidified his position as the top gravel driver of the season and positioned Subaru as a formidable contender in both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships.
