Start/Finish Location: Faro, Portugal

Total Distance: 1,523.03 km overall (434.77 km of special stages)

Unusually heavy rain turned the normally dry Portuguese gravel stages into mud baths. Mikko Hirvonen initially won but was later disqualified for technical irregularities, handing Østberg his maiden WRC victory.

Route

Santa Clara: Muddy, narrow roads with deep ruts.
Ourique: Long rhythm-based stage with elevation changes.
Fafe: Power stage with massive jump into the finish.

Twisting gravel stages in the Algarve region, featuring slippery clay-based surfaces when wet.

Night stages added extra drama as fog and rain reduced visibility to near zero.

Navigation & Challenges

  • Low Grip: Mud caused constant sliding and wheelspin.
  • Visibility: Night fog and rain tested co-driver calls.
  • Ruts: Deep ruts upset car balance on second passes.

Portugal 2012 was a rally of attrition, where survival was as important as speed.
