History 1960s

Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV

Overview

Launched in late 1967 as part of Alfa Romeo's new 105 Series lineup, the Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV (Gran Turismo Veloce) was a refined evolution of the Giulia Sprint GT. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, the 1750 GTV combined elegant lines with competitive engineering, becoming a formidable entry in Group 1 and Group 2 rally classes. It played a key role in bridging Alfa’s transition from national competition to European rally stages during the late 1960s.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The 1750 GTV featured a stiffer bodyshell, improved cooling system, and optional limited-slip differential in rally-prepared variants. Its all-disc brake setup and lively dual-carb engine made it highly competitive in the under-2.0L class.

πŸ† Competitive Highlights

  • 1968 Acropolis Rally – Group 1 Class Winner β€” Demonstrated exceptional durability over rough Greek terrain.
  • 1969 Tulip Rally – Group 2 Class Podium β€” Consistently outpaced heavier rivals with superior handling.
  • 1969 Tour de Corse – Top-10 Overall β€” Proved competitive even against more powerful entries on twisty tarmac stages.

Although not a factory-backed effort like Fiat or Ford, Alfa Romeo's privateer and dealer-supported teams secured strong results throughout Europe with the 1750 GTV, especially in regional and national rally series.

Driving Characteristics

The 1750 GTV was praised for its precise steering, neutral handling, and smooth power delivery. The twin-cam engine had a wide usable power band, making it forgiving for less experienced drivers while rewarding for veterans. On gravel or twisty asphalt, it excelled in momentum driving thanks to its balanced chassis and responsive throttle.
