Triumph TR4

Overview

Launched in 1961, the Triumph TR4 was a major evolution of the British sports car formula. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, it combined striking bodywork with robust mechanicals, including a 2.1L engine and advanced (for the time) handling features. With its torque-rich motor, precise rack-and-pinion steering, and rally-tuned suspension options, the TR4 earned respect as both a competitive stage car and a roadgoing performance icon throughout the 1960s.

Technical Specs & Innovations

Notable features included optional overdrive, a rigid chassis with independent front suspension, and rack-and-pinion steering. Though early TR4s retained a live rear axle, many rally-prepared models received upgraded suspension and limited-slip differentials.

πŸ† Competitive Highlights

  • 1962 Monte Carlo Rally β€” Class Win (GT 2.0L) β€” Triumph TR4s finished ahead of key rivals on icy Alpine roads.
  • 1963 Tulip Rally β€” Sports Car Class Podium β€” Strong reliability and pace across fast Dutch stages.
  • 1964 Acropolis Rally β€” Class Victory β€” Demonstrated toughness and torque on Greece’s punishing gravel roads.

Privateers and works-backed TR4s proved their mettle across mixed-surface events in Europe, with the car consistently finishing in class podium positions.

Driving Characteristics

The TR4’s ample low-end torque and strong midrange made it ideal for climbing stages and loose surfaces. Its predictable handling and durable suspension gave drivers the confidence to push hard over long-distance events, and the overdrive allowed sustained cruising between competitive sections.
