MG Metro 6R4

Overview

Developed by Williams Grand Prix Engineering and launched in 1984, the MG Metro 6R4 (6-cylinder, Rally, 4WD) was Britain’s bold entry into Group B rallying. Based loosely on the Austin Metro, the 6R4 was anything but ordinary — featuring a mid-mounted, naturally aspirated V6 engine and all-wheel drive. Its instant throttle response and short-wheelbase made it nimble on tight and technical stages, particularly in the UK. Though overshadowed by turbocharged rivals in the WRC, it remained a favorite in national championships and rallycross long after Group B’s demise.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The lack of turbocharging gave the 6R4 near-instant throttle response — a key advantage in tight, technical conditions. It was less powerful than top Group B rivals, but far more manageable in short bursts of competition.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1985 Lombard RAC Rally: Tony Pond finishes third overall — the car’s best WRC result.
  • 1986 WRC Season: Participated in multiple rounds with Pond and Malcolm Wilson; plagued by reliability issues.
  • British Rally Championship: Popular and competitive entry into the late '80s and early '90s.

Although it didn’t win in the WRC, the 6R4 carved a niche in domestic events and rallycross, where its responsiveness and robust design gave it a second life beyond Group B.

Driving Characteristics

The 6R4 was known for its razor-sharp handling and immediate engine response. With no turbo lag to manage, drivers could rely on linear power delivery and sharp turn-in, especially on narrow and winding stages. Its short wheelbase made it twitchy at high speed but unbeatable in hairpins and short bursts. The sound of its V6 echoed through forests and stadiums alike, making it a crowd favorite.
