History 1980s

Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 / Evo 2

Overview

Launched in 1984, the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 (T16) was Peugeot’s answer to the growing intensity of Group B rallying. Despite being based on the small 205 hatchback, the T16 was a completely reengineered machine, sporting a mid-mounted engine and four-wheel drive system that made it a beast on all surfaces. Its compact size, incredible agility, and relentless pace made it a top contender from the outset. With the introduction of the Evo 2 variant in 1985, it became nearly untouchable, going on to dominate the World Rally Championship.

Technical Specs & Innovations

Despite its humble looks, the 205 T16 was a rally supercar in disguise. The Evo 2 brought wider tracks, more power, and improved suspension — turning it into one of the fiercest Group B machines ever built.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1984 WRC Debut: Ari Vatanen wins the Rallye de Finland in only the car’s third event.
  • 1985 WRC Sweep: Timo Salonen wins the Drivers’ Championship; Peugeot wins Manufacturers’ title.
  • 1986 WRC Repeat: Juha Kankkunen takes the Drivers’ crown; Peugeot defends Manufacturers’ title.
  • 1986 Argentinian Rally: Evo 2 proves its dominance on rough terrain with massive time gaps over rivals.

With 16 WRC wins between 1984 and 1986, the 205 T16 was the definitive Group B champion. No other car matched its combination of speed, consistency, and durability across such a range of surfaces.

Driving Characteristics

The T16 was nimble, balanced, and exceptionally fast — especially in Evo 2 form. Its mid-engine layout gave it excellent handling balance, while the AWD ensured confidence in slippery conditions. While turbo lag was present, experienced drivers learned to anticipate and manipulate throttle timing. It responded best to aggressive, committed driving, rewarding those who trusted its capabilities.
