History 1990s

Daewoo Nexia / Espero

Overview

The Daewoo Nexia and Espero were compact sedans based on licensed Opel platforms, adapted and marketed under the Daewoo badge throughout the 1990s. Though never officially developed as factory rally cars, both models appeared in the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) and regional events as privateer entries or locally prepared promotional cars. Their presence reflected Daewoo’s aspirations to join the motorsport world and raise brand visibility across Asian and Eastern European markets.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • Minor Entries in APRC Events — Daewoo-backed Nexias and Esperos appeared sporadically in Malaysian, Chinese, and Indonesian rallies.
  • Brand Promotion Campaigns — Used more for visibility and local engagement than competitive aspirations.
  • These models served as symbolic efforts by Daewoo to explore motorsport rather than as serious competitive entries.

While never serious podium threats, the Nexia and Espero gave local teams and Daewoo dealers a foothold in rally culture during the brand’s expansion years.

Driving Characteristics

Both cars were softly sprung and underpowered in standard form, requiring significant modification to handle rally stages. When prepared properly, they were predictable and stable, if not particularly fast or agile. Their front-wheel-drive layout made them manageable in low-grip conditions common in Southeast Asian rallies.
