History 1990s

Ford Escort RS Cosworth

Overview

Developed as a Group A homologation special, the Ford Escort RS Cosworth debuted in 1993 as the successor to the Sierra RS Cosworth 4x4. Although visually based on the Escort Mk5, it was built on a shortened Sierra platform to house its longitudinal Cosworth YB engine and sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. With its enormous rear wing, flared arches, and turbocharged punch, it became one of the most recognizable and beloved rally cars of the early 1990s.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The Escort RS Cosworth featured aggressive aerodynamic tuning, especially its famous “whale tail” rear spoiler, which was functional at high speeds. It maintained Ford’s rally commitment during the twilight of Group A regulations.
