History 1990s

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV–VI

Overview

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV, V, and VI represent the most dominant period in Mitsubishi's rally history, driven by the legendary Tommi Mäkinen. Built for the evolving World Rally Championship landscape, each version featured sharper handling, more power, and increasingly aggressive aerodynamics. Mäkinen's remarkable run from 1997 to 1999 — including three WRC Drivers’ Championships in these models — sealed the Evo’s place in rallying history.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The Evo V and VI introduced wider bodywork, a front helical LSD, and upgraded geometry for better grip and turn-in. The VI also refined engine cooling and aero efficiency, especially in the special Tommi Mäkinen Edition (TME).

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1997–1999 WRC Drivers’ Champion — Tommi Mäkinen achieved three consecutive titles in the Evo IV–VI.
  • Victories across surfaces — From Monte Carlo to Safari, these Evos dominated on gravel, snow, and tarmac.
  • While Mitsubishi didn’t clinch a Manufacturers’ title during this stretch, the Evo’s winning consistency made it the benchmark of the era.

Tommi Mäkinen’s synergy with these cars became legendary, and each Evo reflected his aggressive, yet controlled driving style.

Driving Characteristics

The Evo IV–VI series was known for its explosive acceleration, tight chassis response, and high-speed confidence. Improvements to suspension and differentials allowed for quick corner exits and predictable handling even in the roughest rallies. The Evo VI was the most refined of the trio, offering both control and raw pace in equal measure.
