History 1990s

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I–III

Overview

Launched between 1992 and 1996, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I, II, and III were Group A homologation specials born to compete in the WRC. Developed from the compact Lancer chassis, the Evos featured turbocharged power, full-time all-wheel drive, and progressively aggressive styling and aerodynamics. These early models set the stage for Mitsubishi’s eventual WRC success, with Finnish driver Tommi Mäkinen beginning his reign behind the wheel of the Evo III in 1996.

Technical Specs & Innovations

Each iteration brought refinements: the Evo II introduced better suspension and grip, while the Evo III delivered improved aero, cooling, and more aggressive torque delivery. All three were highly tunable and built for stage aggression.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1996 Rally Sweden Winner — Tommi Mäkinen took his first WRC victory in the Evo III, kicking off a legendary career.
  • 1996 Rally Finland and 1000 Lakes Podiums — Proved Evo’s speed on fast gravel events.
  • While not yet a title winner, the Evo I–III era established Mitsubishi as a top-tier WRC competitor and set the foundation for later dominance.

These cars brought Mitsubishi to the forefront of WRC battle against Subaru and Ford, with a distinct turbocharged personality and raw pace.

Driving Characteristics

The Evo I–III cars were known for their punchy turbo power, quick directional changes, and precise steering. Their compact size made them agile on narrow and technical stages, though earlier versions required careful throttle control to manage turbo lag and traction. Evo III in particular delivered a sharper, more refined rallying experience.
