History 1990s

Peugeot 106 Maxi / S16 Kit Car

Overview

Developed as a smaller sibling to the dominant 306 Maxi, the Peugeot 106 Maxi and S16 Kit Car variants were tailored for the F2 Kit Car category’s lower engine displacement classes. Introduced in the late 1990s, these lightweight, front-wheel-drive machines featured wide-track suspension, naturally aspirated powerplants, and aggressive styling. Though not contenders for overall WRC wins, they became favorites in national tarmac championships, regional rallies, and hillclimbs thanks to their nimbleness and affordability.

Technical Specs & Innovations

Though built for lower-class formulas, the 106 Maxi included serious rally upgrades — wide suspension geometry, lightweight panels, and responsive high-revving engines. It inherited much of the 306 Maxi’s philosophy on a smaller scale.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • French and European National Rally Wins — Regular class victories in the hands of privateers and rising stars.
  • Popular in Hillclimb and Asphalt Rally Cups — Known for quick change of direction and power-to-weight performance.
  • Though never a WRC entry, the 106 Maxi carved out a niche as one of the most capable sub-2.0L FWD rally machines of its time.

It became a stepping stone for young drivers aiming for higher levels of rally competition, while remaining a reliable weapon for seasoned amateurs.

Driving Characteristics

The 106 Maxi was agile and eager, requiring smooth yet aggressive inputs to maintain speed. Its featherweight chassis and short wheelbase made it ideal for hairpins and technical stages, though it demanded constant attention to keep momentum and avoid understeer at the limit.
