History 1990s

Toyota Celica GT-Four ST205

Overview

The Toyota Celica GT-Four ST205 debuted in 1994 as the final and most technologically advanced evolution of Toyota’s Celica rally program. Designed specifically for Group A WRC competition, it featured significant improvements over its predecessors, including a refined turbocharged engine, advanced all-wheel-drive system, and a striking wide-body shell. Though competitive on multiple surfaces, its career was overshadowed by a high-profile disqualification in 1995 that led to Toyota's temporary ban from the WRC.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The ST205 introduced a water spray system for intercooler cooling, adjustable center diff settings, and extensive use of lightweight materials. It also featured the most aggressive aero package of the GT-Four lineage.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1995 Rally of Portugal Winner — Showcased its potential in high-speed gravel stages.
  • Multiple podiums — Contended at top level across Europe and endurance rallies like Safari.
  • Despite its strengths, the car's reputation was marred by a banned turbo restrictor in 1995, resulting in Toyota’s disqualification and a year-long suspension.

Though competitive, the ST205's championship potential was never fully realized due to regulatory infractions that halted Toyota's WRC presence through 1996.

Driving Characteristics

With its advanced AWD system, the ST205 offered superb grip and acceleration. It was stable under braking and quick in high-speed sections, but some drivers found it less agile than rivals in tight, technical rallies. The car demanded precision but rewarded confident inputs with serious pace.
