History 2010

Hyundai i20 WRC (2014–2015)

Overview

After more than a decade away from rallying, Hyundai re-entered the WRC in 2014 with an all-new i20 WRC built to the 1.6L turbocharged regulations. Developed by Hyundai Motorsport in Alzenau, Germany, the project was a fresh start, with the goal of building a competitive and reliable platform to challenge the dominant Volkswagen, Citroën, and Ford entries of the era.

Technical Specs & Innovations

The i20 WRC was developed rapidly, prioritizing reliability and learning over outright pace in its debut season.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 2014 Rally Germany: Thierry Neuville secures Hyundai’s first WRC victory.
  • Multiple podium finishes in debut seasons.
  • Helped attract top driving talent like Dani Sordo and Hayden Paddon.

While not a consistent front-runner, the i20 WRC proved Hyundai could win rallies again, setting the stage for future dominance.

Driving Characteristics

Drivers reported that the i20 WRC was stable and predictable but lacked the ultimate agility and power of the top cars of the time. Its forgiving handling made it an excellent platform for gathering development data and building driver confidence.
