Overview
Ari Vatanen, born in 1952 in Tuupovaara, Finland, emerged as one of the most charismatic and courageous rally drivers of the late 1970s and 1980s. Known for his wild car control, raw speed, and dramatic recoveries, Vatanen became a rally legend by claiming the 1981 WRC Drivers’ Championship with Rothmans Ford. His partnership with David Richards and his later Group B exploits in the Peugeot 205 T16 added to his legacy as a fan-favorite. Despite a near-fatal crash in 1985, Vatanen returned to competition and remained an enduring figure in motorsport, later entering politics and serving in the European Parliament.
