Overview
Hannu Mikkola, born in 1942 in Joensuu, Finland, was one of rallying’s most respected and enduring competitors. Rising to prominence in the late 1960s, Mikkola truly came into his own in the 1970s, where he became a dominant force across the globe. Known for his flat-out pace and calm demeanor, he thrived on fast gravel events and long-haul rallies like the Safari and 1000 Lakes. His consistency, mechanical sympathy, and team leadership made him a top choice for Ford, Toyota, and later, Audi — becoming one of the first drivers to bridge the gap between classic endurance rallying and the modern WRC era.
