Overview
Timo Mäkinen, born in 1938 in Helsinki, Finland, was one of rallying’s first true superstars and a founding member of the legendary “Flying Finns.” Gaining fame in the 1960s, Mäkinen remained a formidable force into the 1970s thanks to his fearless commitment and ability to thrive in brutal rally conditions. Equally at home in snow, gravel, and mud, he was known for driving flat-out regardless of terrain. Mäkinen helped define the aggressive Scandinavian style and inspired generations of Finnish drivers. His reputation for mechanical sympathy and stage domination made him a go-to driver for manufacturers like BMC, Ford, and Peugeot.
