Didier Auriol, born in 1958 in Montpellier, France, emerged in the 1990s as a tarmac specialist turned world champion. After years of strong ERC and WRC performances, he reached the sport’s pinnacle in 1994 by winning the World Rally Championship with Toyota, becoming the first Frenchman to do so. Auriol combined fluid, technically flawless driving with mental toughness, excelling particularly on sealed surfaces but showing strength on gravel as well.
