1968 Rajd Polski (Rally Poland)

Overview

The 1968 Rajd Polski (28th Rally Poland), held from August 1–4 and based in Kraków, was one of the longest-standing and most grueling events on the European rally calendar. Part of the European Rally Championship and the Cup of Peace and Friendship, it emphasized mechanical reliability and strategic endurance across the demanding Polish countryside.

Route

Distance: ~1,800 km total / ~356 km special stages
Surface: Primarily asphalt with some mixed-surface transitions
Key Challenges: Navigation accuracy, mechanical durability, and strategic time control

Spanning a total distance of approximately 1,800 kilometers, the rally included over 350 kilometers of timed special stages. Although Poland was known for its mixed terrain, this edition was predominantly contested on asphalt roads weaving through towns, forests, and remote countryside.

Sudden changes in weather and lengthy transfers between stages made it a mental and physical marathon for teams and vehicles alike.

Navigation & Challenges

With few visual references and variable signage across rural sectors, accurate pacenotes and sharp timing were crucial. Long stints between service stops and changing road conditions tested both drivers and navigators to their limits.

  • Navigation: Essential across remote regions and forested roads
  • Mechanical Stress: Continuous driving stretched parts and fuel plans
  • Strategy: Conservative driving and careful checkpoint timing were keys to survival

The 1968 edition was less about speed and more about finishing—a test of composure, control, and coordination under fatigue.
