1968 Rallye Vltava (Czechoslovakia)

Overview

The 1968 Rallye Vltava, held from July 5–7, was the ninth running of this increasingly prestigious event in Czechoslovakia. Based around the historic town of Písek, it was part of the Cup of Peace and Friendship—a motorsport series for Eastern Bloc nations. Known for its technical layout and consistent tarmac conditions, the rally emphasized precision driving and team coordination over raw speed.

Route

Start/Finish Location: Písek, Czechoslovakia
Distance: ~1,000 km
Terrain: Asphalt with forested curves, urban passages, and hill climbs
Challenges: Blind crests, sudden weather shifts, and narrow rural roads

Covering approximately 1,000 kilometers, the event ran exclusively on asphalt roads winding through the South Bohemian region. Its tight corners, elevation changes, and unpredictable summer weather created a demanding environment for both car and crew.

Precision braking and co-driver pacing were essential on technical descents, where dense foliage and light rain often reduced visibility and traction.

Navigation & Challenges

Crews relied on near-perfect coordination through a maze of forested switchbacks and narrow village lanes. Mistakes were unforgiving, and overtaking opportunities were few and far between.

  • Navigation: Co-driver pace note accuracy was critical through consecutive tight bends
  • Visibility: Summer storms and wooded shadows created inconsistent road grip
  • Time Control: Rigid timing checkpoints demanded efficiency and composure

With little margin for error and few bail-out options, Vltava tested not just the car, but the mental resilience of every team involved.
