History 1960s

Saab 96 Monte Carlo 850

Overview

The Saab Monte Carlo 850, introduced in 1963, was a factory-built high-performance version of the Saab 96 developed specifically for rallying. Based on the earlier 96 platform, it featured an uprated 841 cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine, tuned suspension, and unique trim. Named to commemorate Saab’s success at the Monte Carlo Rally, the MC 850 became a rally icon in the early 1960s and was piloted by Swedish rally legend Erik Carlsson.

Technical Specs & Innovations

Performance upgrades included a close-ratio 4-speed gearbox, larger fuel tank, oil injection system (Saab’s "Autolube"), and enhanced brakes and dampers for competitive endurance rallying.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1963 Monte Carlo Rally — Overall Win — Driven by Erik Carlsson, marking one of Saab’s most famous rally victories.
  • 1963 RAC Rally — Podium Finish — Proved the MC 850’s strength in British gravel and mud conditions.
  • 1964 Tulip Rally — Class Win — Demonstrated continued dominance in mixed-surface European rallies.

The Monte Carlo 850’s victories helped solidify Saab’s reputation as a serious force in international motorsport during the early 1960s.

Driving Characteristics

Thanks to its front-wheel drive layout, the MC 850 delivered superb traction in low-grip conditions. The narrow tires, short wheelbase, and light chassis made it agile and forgiving, while the high-revving two-stroke engine rewarded drivers who could maintain momentum through technical sections.
