Renault 8 Gordini

Overview

Launched in 1964, the Renault 8 Gordini was a high-performance evolution of the Renault 8, tuned by famed French engineer Amédée Gordini. With upgraded internals, twin Solex carburetors, four-wheel disc brakes, and enhanced suspension, it transformed the modest R8 into a dominant small-displacement rally machine. Lightweight and rear-engined, it earned acclaim for punching far above its class in international rallies.

Technical Specs & Innovations

  • Engine: 1,108 cc OHV inline-4 with twin Solex carburetors (early model)
  • Power Output: 85 hp @ 6,500 rpm (1964–1966 model); later 1,255 cc version reached 110 hp
  • Drivetrain: Rear-engine, rear-wheel drive (RR layout)
  • Weight: ~850 kg (1,874 lbs)
  • Suspension: Independent front and rear; upgraded with stiffer dampers and anti-roll bars
