Subaru Legacy RS

Overview

Subaru's first-generation Legacy RS (BC5) was the bridge between the manufacturer's early international rally efforts and the later Impreza dynasty. Subaru Tecnica International and Prodrive developed the production-based, four-door turbocharged saloon under Group A rules, campaigning the works car from 1990 through part of 1993.

It combined a longitudinally mounted Subaru boxer engine with permanent four-wheel drive. The competition Legacy was not identical to a showroom RS: its engine tune, gearbox, brakes, suspension and safety structure evolved during the program, so road-car brochure figures should not be presented as works-stage specifications.

Technical Specs & Innovations

  • Competition category: FIA Group A; first-generation Legacy BC5 four-door saloon.
  • Engine family: Subaru EJ20G, turbocharged, horizontally opposed four-cylinder (boxer); not an FA-series engine.
  • Displacement: 1,994 cc (nominally 2.0 litres); 92 mm bore × 75 mm stroke.
  • Valvetrain: DOHC, four valves per cylinder (16 total).
  • Induction and charge cooling: IHI turbocharger and water-to-air chargecooling in period Group A installations; restrictor sizes varied with the year's regulations.
  • Works output: Approximately 300 hp in contemporary Group A specification, not the roughly 220 PS rating of a Japanese-market road-going Legacy RS.
  • Drivetrain: Permanent four-wheel drive with front, centre and rear differential hardware adapted to the competition specification.
  • Gearbox: Manual competition transmissions; five- and six-speed arrangements are documented across the program rather than a single universal specification.
  • Suspension: Independent MacPherson struts front and rear with rally springs/dampers and geometry changes for different surfaces.
  • Brakes and wheels: Competition ventilated discs and rally-specific wheel, tyre and brake packages; gravel and tarmac setups differed.
  • Structure: Reinforced production-based steel monocoque and full competition roll cage.

Specification caution: The figures above refer to the Group A rally program. Power, transmission and suspension arrangements changed between individual cars, events and years; a showroom BC5 RS is not a reliable source for every works-car detail.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1990: Subaru began its WRC program with the Legacy, learning to develop and service a fully fledged Group A contender across very different rally surfaces.
  • 1991–92: Drivers including Markku Alén, Ari Vatanen and Colin McRae contributed results and development work as the car's speed and reliability improved.
  • 1993 Rally New Zealand: Colin McRae and co-driver Derek Ringer won in the Legacy RS—Subaru's first WRC event victory. McRae finished 27 seconds ahead of François Delecour's Escort and 29 seconds ahead of Didier Auriol's Celica.
  • Succession: The smaller Impreza Group A car appeared later in 1993 and became the foundation of Subaru's championship-winning seasons.

The single world-championship event win should not be confused with the Legacy's additional national and regional rally successes.

Driving Characteristics

The Legacy's boxer layout positioned significant engine mass relatively low in the chassis, while full-time four-wheel drive helped it deploy power on loose surfaces. The larger four-door shell also meant more mass and a longer package to rotate through tight stages than the Impreza that followed.

Its development was as much about durability and differential, suspension and cooling calibration as about headline horsepower. Exact handling behaviour differed between early and late works builds and between gravel and tarmac configurations.

Legacy & context

The 1993 New Zealand victory validated the Subaru–Prodrive program immediately before the Impreza era. The Legacy established the engineering and team infrastructure that carried forward; it was not a World Rally Car-formula machine (those regulations arrived in 1997).
