Toyota Celica GT-Four ST205

Overview

The ST205 GT-Four was Toyota Team Europe's last works Celica built for Group A rallying. It appeared late in the 1994 WRC season ahead of a full 1995 program, using the sixth-generation Celica body, a developed 3S-GTE turbocharged inline-four and permanent four-wheel drive.

The road-going ST205 included distinctive homologation-era components, but road-car specifications should not be substituted for Toyota's works rally technical figures. In particular, the road model's complex 'Super Strut' front suspension was not ultimately the preferred works-stage arrangement.

Technical Specs & Innovations

  • Competition class: FIA Group A; works Celica ST205 rally car (1994–95 factory program).
  • Engine: Toyota 3S-GTE, turbocharged inline-four, DOHC.
  • Displacement: 1,998 cc (2.0 litres).
  • Turbocharger: Toyota CT20B twin-entry turbocharger in Toyota's published rally specification.
  • Charge-air cooling: Water-cooled intercooler.
  • Works power: Toyota lists 299 bhp (223 kW) at 5,600 rpm for its competition example.
  • Works torque: Approximately 500 Nm per Toyota's rally specification.
  • Drivetrain: Four-wheel drive with six-speed manual competition gearbox.
  • Works weight: Toyota's published competition specification: approximately 1,200 kg, not production-car curb weight.
  • Dimensions (works car): Length 4,424 mm; width 1,770 mm; wheelbase 2,545 mm.
  • Brakes and wheels: Ventilated discs, Michelin tyres and OZ Racing wheels in Toyota's historical works specification.
  • Suspension development: Works cars used a homologated conventional MacPherson-strut solution rather than relying on the road car's more complex Super Strut system.

Specification caution: These are factory competition specifications published by Toyota; they are not the ratings for a production ST205 GT-Four. The turbo-restrictor infringement described below was a separate rule-compliance issue, not a normal performance specification.

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 1994: The ST205 entered WRC competition late in the season as TTE prepared to replace the ST185.
  • 1995 Tour de Corse: Didier Auriol and Denis Giraudet took the ST205's sole works WRC round win. Contemporary final classifications identify this crew as winners, despite a conflicting name in a later Toyota media retrospective.
  • 1995 Rally Catalunya: FIA scrutineering uncovered a non-compliant mechanism around the turbocharger's air restrictor that allowed air to bypass the mandated restriction.
  • Sanction: Toyota Team Europe was excluded from the 1995 championship and suspended from the 1996 world championship; championship points attributed to its drivers were annulled.
  • After the works ban: Independently entered and regional-team ST205s continued to compete; the sanction applied to Toyota's works entry rather than erasing every ST205 from rallying.

The ST205 should not be credited with the ST185's 1992–94 titles. Nor should the 1995 exclusion be presented as evidence that the named drivers personally designed or knew of the illegal restrictor system.

Driving Characteristics

On stage the ST205's turbocharged 3S-GTE, four-wheel drive and long-travel rally suspension could produce substantial grip and pace, but the move from the production car's Super Strut concept to a homologated conventional strut arrangement demonstrates the difficulty of translating sophisticated road hardware directly into durable rally hardware.

Heat management, driveline durability and suspension setup remained critical on mixed surfaces. The 1995 championship scandal should not replace discussion of the car's actual engineering, nor should its quoted works figures be confused with the stock GT-Four.

Legacy & context

The ST205 marked the end of Toyota's Group A Celica works era. Its only WRC win came in Corsica in 1995, followed by the team's turbo-restrictor exclusion. Toyota's next top-level works rally platform was the Corolla built to World Rally Car rules; regional and privateer ST205 use continued beyond the works suspension.
