Subaru Impreza WRC2001–2008

Overview

This archive entry covers eight successive seasons of Prodrive-built Subaru Impreza World Rally Cars, 2001 through 2008, rather than one unchanging vehicle. The new-generation GD-based, four-door WRC2001 replaced the earlier two-door GC-based works car; the completely different five-door GE hatchback made its debut partway through 2008.

Richard Burns and Robert Reid won the 2001 drivers' and co-drivers' world championship, while Petter Solberg and Phil Mills took those honours in 2003. Subaru did not add a manufacturers' title during this period: its last manufacturers' title was 1997, and the company withdrew its factory WRC programme after 2008.

Because the category spans very different shells, homologation extensions and technical configurations, figures from a surviving WRC2003 sedan cannot simply be copied onto the WRC2008 hatchback. The details below distinguish the GD WRC2001–07 generation and the 2008 GE WRC08 where evidence permits.

Technical Specs & Innovations

  • Competition category: FIA World Rally Car, not production Group N WRX/STI and not the earlier GC Impreza 555
  • Manufacturer and developer: Subaru with UK engineering, build and rally operations led by Prodrive
  • Body generations: GD-based four-door Impreza sedan WRC2001–07; GE-based five-door hatchback WRC2008 introduced at the Acropolis Rally
  • Engine configuration: Front-longitudinal EJ-series turbocharged horizontally opposed four-cylinder (boxer), with DOHC and four valves per cylinder
  • GD WRC2001 capacity: A period WRC2001 technical reference gives approximately 1,994 cc, using 92.0 mm bore × 75.0 mm stroke
  • GE WRC2008 capacity: A specialist WRC08 homologation summary lists approximately 1,998 cc; do not silently apply the GD figure to every evolution
  • Power context: Period WRC-restricted tuning was typically reported near 300 hp; actual dyno curves, turbo configuration and torque differed by build
  • Aspiration: Single turbocharger and charge-air cooling with competition anti-lag and boost management
  • Gearbox development: Prodrive's electronically controlled, hydraulically operated paddle-shift transmission appeared in this broader WRC lineage; individual configurations and years need identification
  • GE WRC2008 gearbox: Published specialist WRC08 reference lists a six-speed automated manual with paddle shift or an H-pattern option
  • Drive and differentials: Full-time four-wheel drive with competition front/centre/rear differential architecture; active control changed with regulations and works updates
  • 2001 chassis: Reinforced GD four-door steel monocoque with full roll-cage and significantly different aerodynamics from the GC coupe
  • 2003 chassis identifier: The championship-winning-era WRC2003 is commonly associated with Prodrive S9 development; confirm chassis documents before applying a label to an individual car
  • 2003 powertrain changes: Surviving Prodrive-chassis history describes a larger intercooler and improved anti-lag booster versus the earlier generation
  • 2008 GE shell: Five-door hatchback with wide arches and new body/aero package, rather than the preceding sedan's shape
  • 2008 GE dimensions: Specialist WRC08 reference lists approximately 4,415 mm length, 1,800 mm width and 2,635 mm wheelbase; these are not GD sedan dimensions
  • 2008 GE weight: Specialist published WRC08 specification lists 1,230 kg; a representative homologated rally weight, not an STI showroom kerb weight
  • Suspension: Competition strut-based layouts, with travel, springs, dampers and anti-roll calibration adapted to year and surface
  • Tarmac/gravel specification: Different wheels, brakes, tyre compounds and ride heights were prepared for the surface and stage demands
  • Electronics: Engine management, data logging, boost and transmission/differential functions evolved; do not treat year-to-year software as identical
  • Team and drivers: Burns/Reid (2001); Solberg/Mills (2003); later Solberg and Chris Atkinson/Stephane Prévot in the WRC08 period

🏆 Competitive Highlights

  • 2001 drivers' championship: Richard Burns and Robert Reid won the world drivers' and co-drivers' titles for Subaru with the new-generation Impreza.
  • 2002 Wales Rally GB: Petter Solberg and Phil Mills scored their first WRC victory before their championship season.
  • 2003 drivers' championship: Solberg and Mills sealed the drivers'/co-drivers' championships at Rally GB; Citroën won the manufacturers' title that season.
  • 2003 technical evolution: The new 'blobeye' WRC2003 followed the initial 'bugeye' WRC2001 appearance and featured changes to charge-air cooling and anti-lag.
  • 2005 Rally Sweden: Solberg and Mills won with a WRC2004-generation car, illustrating that year labels do not necessarily equal an entrant's event year.
  • 2008 Acropolis Rally: The all-new five-door Impreza WRC2008 debuted on the Greek gravel stages; Solberg and Mills finished second overall.
  • After 2008: Subaru discontinued the factory WRC programme at the end of the season. Customer and historic competition did not end with the works team.

Driving Characteristics

The longitudinal boxer installation, all-wheel-drive layout and adjustable diffs shaped the Impreza's traction and balance on changing surfaces. Handling descriptions must be qualified by setup and evolution: a 2001 GD sedan and a 2008 GE hatchback are not interchangeable in weight distribution or aerodynamic behaviour.

Compared with the GD generation, the GE introduced a significantly different bodyshell and packaging. WRC08 setup data such as brake diameters, track and wheelbase must be anchored to that specific year rather than used as generic 2001–08 figures.

The category's championship record also illustrates that an individual drivers' title does not imply a manufacturers' title; Subaru's world manufacturers' record and its 2001/2003 drivers' successes belong in separate rows.

Development & legacy

The early-2000s Impreza preserved Subaru's highest-profile rally identity through the Burns and Solberg championships and the team's final 2008 season. For a future archive split, GD WRC2001–07 and GE WRC2008 would be logical technical subpages with redirects from this existing record.
