History 1970s

Shekhar Mehta

Overview

Shekhar Mehta, born in 1945 in Uganda, was one of the most successful endurance rally drivers of the 1970s and early 1980s. Raised in East Africa, Mehta developed a deep understanding of the region’s brutal terrain and weather, giving him a unique edge in events like the Safari Rally — a rally he would win five times. He was known for combining mechanical empathy with a smooth, measured driving style that prioritized survival without sacrificing speed. Mehta became a national hero in Kenya and a respected figure globally for his grace, endurance, and sportsmanship both in and out of the car.

🏆 Major Achievements

While his success was most pronounced in Africa, Mehta’s consistent performances and deep rally knowledge earned him international respect and a long-standing legacy within the WRC community.

Vehicle Highlights

  • Datsun 240Z / 260Z / 160J (Violet): Mehta’s primary vehicles during his Safari domination, combining durability with surprisingly quick pace.
  • Peugeot 504: Competed in Peugeot’s robust African rally program with notable results in harsh terrain.
  • Nissan 240RS: Used later in his career during the early 1980s, particularly in high-profile African events.

Mehta’s driving style was perfectly matched to the rugged but reliable Datsuns. He worked closely with the factory to ensure the cars could survive enormous punishment while staying competitive.

Driving Style & Legacy

Mehta was calm, intelligent, and calculated — never pushing beyond the car’s limit unless absolutely necessary. He understood the importance of mechanical sympathy, pacing, and terrain anticipation, making him a master of attrition rallies. Beyond his victories, Mehta’s legacy includes his leadership in motorsport governance and advocacy for greater inclusion and safety within the sport.

Navigation & Teamwork

Mehta partnered with several co-drivers throughout his career, most notably Mike Doughty. Their deep understanding of African navigation challenges — including wildlife hazards, deep ruts, and unpredictable weather — allowed them to remain composed under grueling conditions. Mehta valued collaboration and often praised his team’s mechanical and logistical work as critical to his success, reinforcing the importance of unity in long-distance rally competition.
