Per Eklund

Overview

Per Eklund competed across rallying, rallycross and hill climbs during a long career associated with Saab and several privateer programmes.

His only WRC win belongs to the 1970s, but substantial continued competition supports his 1980s entry.

🏆 Major Achievements

Won the 1976 Swedish Rally in a Saab 96 V4, his only WRC victory.
Continued selected WRC appearances in the 1980s with Saab, Toyota, Audi and other cars.
Later became a leading rallycross competitor and won Pikes Peak in 2000.

Vehicle Highlights

  • Saab 99 Turbo: Continued to campaign this iconic turbocharged car into the early '80s with notable success on snow.
  • Audi Quattro A2: Competed with this AWD benchmark in the mid-'80s, adapting to the evolving pace of the Group B field.
  • MG Metro 6R4: Piloted this short-wheelbase Group B rocket in select late-decade events with strong showings.

Eklund was one of the few drivers to span multiple vehicle philosophies, from Saab’s quirky turbo setups to Group B’s aggressive AWD monsters.

Driving Style & Legacy

Eklund was known for his calm and precise driving, particularly effective on technical snow and gravel stages. He lacked the flamboyance of the top title contenders but made up for it with clean, intelligent driving and mechanical sensitivity. His transition from Saab to Group B competitors showcased his technical adaptability. While never a factory favorite, he became a cult hero among rally fans and privateer hopefuls.
