1965 KAK Rallyt – Swedish Rally

Overview

Event: 1965 KAK Rallyt

Winner: Tom Trana and Gunnar Thermaenius, Volvo PV544

The 1965 running was the first winter edition of Sweden's international rally. Trana and Thermaenius therefore won both the final summer event in 1964 and the first event in its new snow-and-ice format.

Route

Forest roads: Snowbanks defined narrow corridors at speed.
Ice: Studded tyres made high speeds possible but demanded precise control.
Cold: Engines, brakes, lighting, and crew endurance all faced additional strain.

Moving the rally to winter transformed its character. Snow-covered forest roads and frozen surfaces placed greater emphasis on traction, studded tyres, and the ability to read the changing grip beneath a uniform white surface.

Car Highlights

  • Volvo PV544: Its robust construction and controllable rear-wheel-drive chassis supported Trana's winning run.
  • Saab 96: Front-wheel drive and Scandinavian development made it a natural winter contender.
  • Mini Cooper: Compact dimensions and agility suited narrow, snow-lined roads.

Navigation & Challenges

  • Snowbanks: They could guide a car through a bend or trap it completely.
  • Stud management: Tyre condition changed as ice, snow, and exposed gravel varied.
  • Visibility: Snowfall, darkness, and reflected light complicated pace-note reading.
