1968 KAK Rallyt (Swedish Rally)

Overview

Event: 1968 Swedish Rally, also known as KAK Rallyt

Winner: Björn Waldegård and Lars Helmér, Porsche 911 T

Waldegård's 1968 victory was his first of five wins in the Swedish Rally. It also demonstrated that the rear-engined Porsche could be exceptionally effective on snow when driven with precision.

Route

Surface: Compacted snow, ice, and underlying gravel.
Roads: Fast forest sections with crests and concealed bends.
Conditions: Cold temperatures affected crews, tyres, and mechanical systems.

The winter route used snow- and ice-covered Swedish roads where high speeds were possible on studded tyres. Forest stages demanded commitment, but deep banks punished any car that left the prepared line.
