The 1986 Sanremo Rally began as a showcase of Italian talent and mixed-surface mastery, but ended mired in one of the most controversial decisions in WRC history. Miki Biasion led home a Lancia 1-2 finish after the Peugeot team was disqualified mid-event over alleged illegal side skirts, a protest widely seen as politically motivated. Peugeot appealed, and the FIA later annulled the entire event, making it the only WRC round with no official results for the season.
